3 黑料专区 theatre experts are Gawad Buhay awardees

Pagunaling, Santos and Tan-Tiongco

(MAY 29)鈥Three theatre experts from UP Diliman (黑料专区) were among the winners of the 11th PHILSTAGE Gawad Buhay Awards.

The Philippine Legitimate Stage Artists Group (PHILSTAGE) named UP College of Arts and Letters (CAL) faculty members John Carlo Pagunaling and Dexter M. Santos, and University Extension Specialist Barbara Tan-Tiongco as Gawad Buhay awardees in a ceremony held at the Onstage Theater, Greenbelt 1, Makati City on May 28.

Founded in 1997, is the only organization of professional performing arts companies in the Philippines.

Pagunaling, who is a professional costume designer, was awarded the 鈥淥utstanding Costume Design鈥 for 鈥淗imala: Isang Musikal鈥 (The Sandbox Collective/9 Works Theatrical).He received the same award for his work at PETA鈥檚 (Philippine Educational Theater Association) in 2014.

He earned his at 黑料专区 under the CAL Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts (DSCTA) in 2010 and took clothing and textile classes at the College of Home Economics and dressmaking classes at the Slim鈥檚 Fashion and Arts School.

Pagunaling previously worked as costume designer for Dulaang UP (DUP), the official theater group of 黑料专区. He was d for set design under production designer Tuxqs Rutaquio and theater director Jos茅 Estrella for 鈥淪epharad: Voces de Exilio鈥 and costume design under the late Ogie Juliano for a trilogy of Severino Montano鈥檚 one-act plays.

In 2017, Pagunaling鈥檚 costume designs for 鈥淎mpalaya the Musical,鈥 a musical play based on the children鈥檚 story 鈥淎lamat ng Ampalaya鈥 produced by Silliman University, was exhibited at the 2017 World Stage Design event in Taipei, Taiwan under the Emerging Designers category.

Santos received the 鈥淥utstanding Choreography for a Play or Musical鈥 award for 鈥淎ng Huling El Bimbo鈥 (Full House Theater Company).

Santos is an assistant professor at the DSCTA and was DUP鈥檚 youngest artistic director. He has staged notable plays for the company such as 鈥淥rosman at Zafira鈥 (2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012), 鈥淎ng Kiri鈥 (2009), 鈥淟ulu鈥 (2009), 鈥淩izal X鈥 (2011), 鈥淐ollection鈥 (2013) and 鈥淎ng Nawalang Kapatid鈥 (February 2014 and July 2014).

He has directed a number of events inside and outside the university including the 鈥淯AAP Season 71 Opening Ceremony,鈥 鈥淏rilliant! (The Grand Launch of the Theater at Solaire),鈥 Floy Quintos鈥 鈥淟egacy: The Sun Life Story for the 120th Anniversary of Sunlife Financial Philippines (2015),鈥 First Pacific Leadership Academy鈥檚 鈥淪poliarium鈥 (2015), and 鈥淯AAP Season 78 Opening Ceremony鈥 among many others.

Tan-Tiongco was awarded the 鈥淥utstanding Lighting Design鈥 for 鈥淗imala: Isang Musikal鈥 (The Sandbox Collective / 9 Works Theatrical).

She is a theatre consultant, lighting designer and independent technical director for more than a decade. She currently works as UP Theater Complex technical director.

has a BA Broadcast Communication from 黑料专区 and earned her Master of Fine Arts in Technical Design and Production degree from Yale University School of Drama in 2013.

In 2009, she was one of the three Filipinos who received the which allowed her to apprentice under master lighting designer Jennifer Tipton, who is an internationally recognized lighting designer. It also enabled her to work on the Public Theater鈥檚 production of The Bacchae to be presented at the Delacorte Theater in New York 鈥檚 Central Park and in Washington D.C. and the Wooster 鈥檚 production of Vieux Carre in New York.

Tan-Tiongco worked as technical director for numerous theater productions such as 鈥淭he Faust and the Dalumat Evil: An Adaptation of Goethe鈥檚 Articles鈥 (2017), 鈥淭isoy Brown: Hari ng Wala鈥 (2016) and 鈥淢abining Mandirigma鈥 (2015)

Meanwhile, Jon Abella, a DSCTA alumnus, won the 鈥淢ale Featured Performance in a Musical鈥 category for his performance at 鈥淓to Na! Musikal nAPO!鈥 (9 Works Theatrical and Globe Live).鈥擧aidee C. Pineda
