Former UFS director is new CFA dean

Prof. Mitzi Marie Aguilar-Reyes

(JUN. 3) 鈥Prof. Mitzi Marie Aguilar-Reyes, former director of the University Food Service (UFS), is UP College of Fine Arts鈥 (UPCFA) new dean effective Apr. 29.

The UP Board of Regents approved Aguilar-Reyes鈥檚 appointment at its 1344th meeting on Apr. 29 and will serve as dean until Apr. 28, 2022.

Aguilar-Reyes earned both her Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Visual Communication and Master of Arts in History in UP in 1983 and 1994, respectively.

A professor at the Department of Visual Communication (DVC), she has been with the University for more than three decades and was DVC chair from 2005 to 2010.

Appointed by Chancellor Michael L. Tan as UFS officer-in-charge in 2015, she later became its director and served until May 2019.

As faculty, Aguilar-Reyes received numerous awards and grants including the 鈥淯P Arts Productivity System Award 2019鈥 as UP Artist 1; 鈥淥ne UP Professorial Chair鈥 grants for 2018-2019 and 2017-2018; 鈥淛ose Joya Professorial Chair鈥 in 1996, 2001 and 2014, and was conferred the 鈥淕uillermo Tolentino Chair鈥 in 2006 and the 鈥淔ederico Alcuaz Professorial Chair鈥 in 2009.

Aguilar-Reyes鈥檚 research on 鈥淭he Patadyong: A Colorful Weaving Tradition of Miag-ao, Iloilo鈥 included in the book 鈥淗ABI, A Journey Through Philippine Handwoven Textiles,鈥 published in 2013 by The Philippine Textile Council.

She co-authored 鈥淕arment of Honor, Garment of Identity,鈥 a comprehensive research on the barong Tagalog published by the Barong Filipino Foundation, Inc. in 2008.

She is one of the founding members of the 鈥淎ng Ilustrador ng Kabataan鈥 (Ang I.N.K.) and was also one of the illustrators of the 鈥淎ng INKredible Coloring Book for Big and Small People鈥 published by Anvil Publishing, Inc. in 2016.

Aguilar-Reyes is a painter, printmaker and potter. She had solo exhibits and has participated in several art exhibits, both local and international.

Among her group exhibitions were: 鈥淣ature-Nurture鈥 of the Philippine Association of Printmakers (Cultural Center of the Philippines, Sept. 28, 2017); 鈥淟eft Wing-Right Wing 2017鈥 (UPCFA Corredor Gallery, Aug. 11-31, 2017); 鈥淜athang Luad: Sanbukluran, International Art Exhibition鈥 (UPCFA Corredor Gallery, Nov. 13-30, 2017); and 鈥淧RINTMAKING: An Art Exhibit with the Philippine Association of Printmakers,鈥 sponsored by The LRSL Foundation for the Arts at the Philippine Center, (556 Fifth Ave., New York, NY, U.S.A., Apr. 9 to 14, 2013).

Two of her three solo exhibits were 鈥淪olstice Reflections鈥 (Start 101 Art Gallery, Ground Floor,UP Centennial Dorm, E. Jacinto St., Sept. 25 to Oct. 12, 2018) and 鈥淟eaving Impressions鈥 (Fernando B. Sena Buenas Artes Art Facilty Oct. 10- 20, 2016).

Aguilar-Reyes is a Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan committee member for the National Living Treasure Award of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts; a Philippine Center for Gifted Education, Inc. advisory board member, and UP Delta Lambda Sigma Sorority faculty adviser. 鈥擧aidee C.
