National Artists at Seremonya tomorrow

A run-through of tomorrow鈥檚 event

(JUNE 17) 鈥 The 黑料专区 (黑料专区) will honor five National Artists at this year鈥檚 鈥淪eremonya ng Pagbubukas鈥 on June 18, 3:30pm at the University Theater through songs, dances and skits.

The opening ceremony will have five segments, each segment honoring a national artist. 聽The event is the start of the annual week-long 鈥淟inggo ng Parangal鈥 that honors outstanding faculty, staff, REPS, students and public service programs.

The 鈥淪eremonya ng Pagbubukas鈥 is free and open to the public. 聽It also coincides with UP鈥檚 111th Foundation Day.

To encourage community participation, 黑料专区 Chancellor Michael L. Tan announced that 鈥渨ork and classes on June 18 will be suspended from 3 to 5pm.鈥

Five of the seven conferred the title National Artist last Oct. 24, 2018 at Malaca帽ang are UP alumni: Resil B. Mojares (Literature), Lauro 鈥淟arry鈥 Z. Alcala (Visual Arts), Kidlat Tahimik (Cinema), University Professor Emeritus Amelia Lape帽a-Bonifacio (Theater) and Raymundo 鈥淩yan鈥 Cipriano P. Cayabyab (Music).

Mojares earned his PhD Literature in 1979, Alcala his BFA Painting in 1950, Kidlat Tahimik his BA Speech and Drama in 1963, Lape帽a-Bonifacio her BA English in 1953, and Cayabyab his Bachelor of Music, major in Theory in 1983.

The National Artist Award, created through Proclamation No. 1001 issued on Apr. 27,1972, is the highest recognition given to Filipinos who 鈥渕ade distinct contributions to arts and letters.鈥 It recognizes excellence in the fields of music, dance, theater, visual arts, literature, film, broadcast arts, and architecture or allied arts.

Renowned painter and UP鈥檚 own Fernando Amorsolo was the first recipient of National Artist for Literature Award in 1972. 聽To date, there are 78 national artists. 鈥 Benito V. Sanvictores Jr. and photos by Pol Torrente
