National language develops from existing RP languages

(AUG. 17)鈥擳he national language evolves and develops based on existing languages in the Philippines. This was part of the conclusion of Francisco Rosario Jr.鈥檚 research which he presented at the annual Linguistics Faculty Research Colloquium, Aug. 17, 1 to 4 p.m. at the Palma Hall 207.

Rosario, who presented 鈥淭he role of language transfer in language variation and change: The case of Pangasinan & Filipino鈥 said innovations in the language result in linguistic variation.

鈥淚ndigenization of the Filipino basically the Filipino spoken by Pangasinan speakers deviates from the grammatical properties of Filipino,鈥 Rosario said.鈥淪o nakikita natin na nagkakaroon ng natural development dito ng national language.鈥 He added, 鈥渉indi na natin kailangan kontrolin, mag-ambagan dahil kung tutuusin natural na nangyayari ito doon sa national language.鈥

Rosario鈥檚 work is one of four researches presented at the colloquium. The others are 鈥淭he dual 鈥榳hen鈥 in selected Philippine languages: Its nature, distribution & potential implications鈥 by Aldrin P. Lee, PhD, 鈥淧orohanon phonology: An acoustic description鈥 by Vincent Christopher Santiago and 鈥淏olinao pronominal system & Philippine voice: A preliminary investigation鈥 by John Venson Villareal.

The four researchers are members of the UP Department of Linguistics faculty and their research works were previously presented at SEALS 28, the 2018 Southeast Asian Linguistics Society Conference held from May 17 to 19 at Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The Faculty Research Colloquium is part of the month-long celebration of Linguistics Month 2018, as part of the Department鈥檚 96th founding anniversary.
